Nutrition
issues are common in lizards because they can be very picky
eaters. You must ensure that they have a varied diet or the
lizard can easily become bored with its food. Omnivores and
herbivores should be fed a wide variety of plant matter. Carnivores
and insectivores can usually be fed all of mealworms, waxworms,
butterworms, silkworms and crickets. Crickets are the most
nutritious and should usually make up the bulk of the diet
but the other insects can be used in moderation as treats.
If your lizard is feeling stressed
it is likely that it will not eat as much as it should or
not eat at all. If this is the case you must first determine
and eliminate the cause of their stress before they will start
eating again.
If all else fails veterinarian
attention is usually necessary as they can provide the lizards
with an injectable vitamin and nutrient supplement. The veterinarian
will also be able to provide with you some ideas as to what
you can add to the lizards diet to ensure the situation does
not reoccur.
