Although there
are very few diseases which hamsters can contract, they are
highly susceptible to diseases which can be passed from either
humans or other animals. This is one of the main reasons why
hamsters are used so much in laboratories for initial testing
of medicine and vaccinations.
In particular, Teddy-Bear Hamsters tend to be very susceptible
to disease so special care must be taken with them. Since
children are generally the primary care-givers for hamsters,
they often neglect the health of the animal whether intentionally
or unintentionally. For this reason parents must keep a
close watch on the actions of their children and the health
of the hamster. You cannot allow your child to be the sole
caregiver for a hamster because the hamster will be at a
much greater risk of disease and infection.
