Abscesses occurs
when an injury to the skin of a hamster becomes infected.
Puss then forms and is trapped within the skin as the wound
heals. After the wound has healed the puss forms a bump under
the hamsters’ skin. Abscesses are often confused with
tumors because of the lump under the surface. If a scratch
or bite mark is clearly visible on the surface of the hamster
this is almost certainly an abscesses.
Occasionally the abscesses will burst which will cause
an expulsion of the fluid within. When this occurs it is
vital that the hamster be taken to a veterinarian because
the risk of infection will have increased dramatically.
Antibiotics are frequently prescribed to reduce the risk
of infection to the hamster. You will need to keep them
hamster free from dirt and dust in order to reduce the risk
of the opened abscesses becoming infected.
